Up, up and......... back down again!!

04 November, 2011

A couple of months ago I provisionally booked an aerial photographic trip over Angus from Perth Airport at Scone, with an aeroplane fanatic - Peter Malone - more than happy to take me up in a wee Cessna to see if I could get some new images for my photographic library. I could scarcely believe him when he said that it was five years since our last aerial adventure over Carnoustie - where DOES time go?? His love of flying is legendary among his colleagues in the club at Scone so he was only too happy...

Snow?? Already??!!

24 October, 2011

Last week's early morning outing to Loch Lomond was intended to capture the strengthening golds and oranges of mid-autumn. That particular ambition yet remains unfulfilled - it seems that the very dry, sunny April weather has caused leaves to dry up, rather than react to the "normal" effects of late October weather and falls in temperature as frosts begin to make their mark. Nevertheless, the first snowfall of an up and coming winter provided a bonus ( see the Ben Lomond pic above ...

Whew.....an exciting week!

14 October, 2011

Last weekend, Carol and I had a splendid break to the Grant Arms Hotel at Grantown on Spey. "Themed" to offer quite superb bird and wildlife watching adventures around an area of Scotland which is renowned for it, it was a fascinating experience. Though the weather was NOT good ( taking the camera in the hope that a "wow" picture might just appear was a total waste of time ) the input of the rangers, hotel staff and other comprehensive back-up facilities around Strathspey was...

Autumn arrives in the Borders

03 October, 2011

Well, the promised heatwave lasted but a couple of days in Scotland ( does anyone else recall high pressure systems that USED to be above us for weeks on end? ) but it was long enough to allow yours truly a smashing morning in Border country - AND a real bonus on the journey home later in the day. As so often happens with a sunrise after a warmish night, the first light of the new day was hazy, so the planned "pic of the day" ( Kirkhope Tower in the Ettrick Valley ) did not quite come off...

The Great Glen at its best

21 September, 2011

After the success of a return visit to Caithness a couple of weeks ago, the unexpected opportunity to catch the forecasters' promised clear night and sunny morning in the "Great Glen" (specifically on the eastern side of Loch Ness) only five days later was too good to miss. For the second time in a week, therefore, an early start and long drive up the A9 ( this time turning left at Daviot onto the Fort Augustus road ) found me on a hillside above Loch Tarff at 6.30 a.m. - and ready...

Photo Books are almost ready.....

06 September, 2011

While August conspired to throw up even more unhelpful weather around Scotland than did July, there was frenetic activity here in the office as the final touches were applied to the first in a new series of beautifully bound, A4 size Photo books which I am about to launch via the website. The idea came about purely as a consequence of digital printing now allowing the publication ( at affordable cost ) of short print runs where, previously, only quantities of 1000 or more units could be considered...

Easter Ross - total fascination......

19 August, 2011

Another 1 a.m. departure, followed by a 200 mile journey to Easter Ross, heralded considerable expectation of photographic success in a part of Scotland which, though pretty remote, surely offers some of the most spectacular panoramas to be enjoyed anywhere. The arrival at the eleventh green of Tain Golf Club just before sunrise should, therefore, have promised much; the location - on the very edge of the Dornoch Firth - looks across the water to Dornoch itself, Golspie, Brora and northwards towards...

Photo Books get nearer.....!

01 August, 2011

While another week of pretty lousy weather has AGAIN blighted photographic plans, one bit of impending excitement threatens to lift the air of depression which has been settling on my shoulders over the absence of new additions to the portfolio in recent weeks. My idea to launch a series of Photo Books, with several different versions becoming available on both landscape and golf images, is about to produce a prototype. Helped enormously by input from sons Campbell and Alistair ( what a shame my...

A poor start to the summer

04 July, 2011

There is absolutely no doubt in MY mind that May and June will be remembered as the worst two months of "summer" weather ever presented to Scottish landscape photographers. Perhaps, on reflection, that statement needs to be qualified so that the eastern half of the country escapes such a scathing summary. Plans (held since January) for three different visits to the west of Scotland and the Inner Hebrides were abandoned daily as one grey or rain-filled day followed another. Fortunately,...
